About Muley Nation

Who Am I

My name is Austin Wright. I was born and raised in Utah, and I escaped into the mountains every chance I could. I’m married to an amazing woman and blessed to be the father of an incredible little girl. God, family, friends, and hunting are the things I hold closest to my heart — and the mountains are where all of those things come together.

I grew up in a family of avid campers, fishermen, and hunters, so it was only a matter of time before I caught the hunting bug myself. I was hooked at a young age, and my dad couldn’t keep me from his side. From the very beginning, I knew hunting would be a lifelong passion — not just for the pursuit, but for the memories it creates with the people I love.

I’ve always had a love for the outdoors, whether it’s camping, fishing, chasing elk, or going after bears — I enjoy it all. But mule deer have always held a special place in my heart. There’s just something about them that’s always drawn me in. That’s why I’ve dedicated my hunting efforts to learning everything I can about mule deer and the places they call home.

How It All Started

Hunting had always been a way of life, but the mule deer obsession didn’t kick in until I drew my first archery deer tag years ago. I remember feeling frustrated the moment I reached the glassing point — I’d shown up way past prime glassing hours. Still, I sat down, got behind the glass, and about 30 minutes later, I caught movement across the canyon. I pulled out the spotter, locked in, and just like that — it was go time. I did everything I’d learned from past failures and hours of listening to podcasts. That advice put me 18 yards away from a respectable 4x4. The 45-minute wait in the baking sun was miserable — and yet one of the most surreal moments I’ve experienced. I’d do it all over again.

When the buck finally stood from his bed, I drew my bow and let the arrow fly. CRACK! It hit high in the shoulder. In that instant, I knew it was a bad shot. Every mistake I made played on repeat in my head. I spent three hours looking for him, but never turned him up. Still — that moment, that stalk, that entire encounter became the spark. It was the greatest interaction I’d ever had with one of these incredible animals. I was standing in God’s country, realizing that with the right knowledge, experience, and a relentless mindset, I could actually do this. That’s what started it all.Paragraph

Feeding The Obsession

There’s something about mule deer that just grabs you. It’s the country they live in — steep, rugged, unforgiving. It’s the way they move — deliberate, ghostlike, never easy to pin down. And it’s the challenge — the mental game, the strategy, the patience it takes to even lay eyes on a mature buck, let alone close the distance with a bow. That challenge is what pulled me in—and it’s what keeps me coming back. I’ve made many mistakes and I will continue to make mistakes. But every busted stalk, every missed opportunity, every sunrise behind the glass taught me something. I became obsessed with learning: podcasts, books, late-night map sessions, offseason scouting, picking apart trail camera photos, and just plain time in the field.

For me, hunting mule deer has never been just about filling a tag. It’s about growing — as a hunter, as a person, and now as a teacher. That’s the spirit Muley Nation is built on. We’re all students of the game. We never stop learning — and we’re in it together.
